a biased review of isolation by shamrain

let me start this post with this: this album is not perfect. it might even be the worst album of shamrain to some (most fans think that is the case) but for me this album holds a special place.

isolation by shamrain

why?

i like the way this album contrasts with the other releases. when the lead vocalist left the band, shamrain had to change their sound to fit the now fronting back vocalist. this shift may have taken that characteristic sound of shamrain the fans loved but i think it also lead to an interesting change in the emotions it provoked. this album makes you feel sad—undoubtedly so—but it is also hopeful. i don't know whether this was intentional or not but i love it.

i feel like this hopefulness can be best seen in the track "everything made perfect sense". yes it is melancholic but not in an overbearing and depressive way. it feels almost bittersweet, like at the end of a film where sacrifices had to be made to reach it's end. things could've gone differently but whatever happened happened and there is no way to change that now. nothing to do other than move forward. and yet it feels optimistic, there are still so much possibilities in the future.

the flaws

that being said this albums first half is much stronger than it's second. i would've liked this album more if they had leaned more into what they did in the first half. but i think tracks like "how can i make it through this night?", "everything made perfect sense", "a room with no view" and "quiet today" are more than enough reasons to like this album.

sadly this album was the end of shamrain. there was never another album to flesh out what was started in this one, which is a shame. i couldn't find any other projects that minna sihvonen (this albums lead vocalist) was involved in other than some minor guest appearances. so i think this flawed but lovable album is all that is left for me.
